Jason Ben

My name is Jason Ben, and though I now live on Chicago’s southside with my wife Marguerita and our four children, Humboldt Park was the first neighborhood I lived in when I moved to the city. I lived in Humboldt Park for three years, and my initial love for Chicago was born out of being part of the community, attending festivals, getting to know the rich culture, and shopping at Cermak Produce. Indeed, two of my children were born in the neighborhood hospital, at St. Mary’s next to Clemente. So the Humboldt Park area will always hold a special place in my heart.

In the time I’ve lived in Chicago, I’ve seen a rise in the cost of housing. This rise has resulted in homelessness, as many people cannot find affordable housing. The housing problem has been exasperated by the influx of Migrants, inflation and other increases in the cost of living in Chicago. I’ve also seen this affect young people, and I’ve personally opened my home to my children’s friends who find themselves without a place to go on many occasions – often time living with me for months at a time.

Housing is not just a crisis we’re facing; it’s a social issue that is personal to me. I was born and raised in Oakdale, a small town in Louisiana, to teenage parents who relied on affordable housing and subsidies to raise my siblings and me.

For the above reasons, I’m proud to serve on Bickerdike’s Board of Directors. Their work is essential and serving on the Board allows me to be part of a solution to a systemic problem. Bickerdike is and should continue to be a leader in community development, with a mission that centers on the needs of individuals who live there.

Freddy Calixto

I am Alfredo “Freddy” Calixto, a long-time resident of the Humboldt Park community. My background includes over 40 plus years of experience working in the non-profit sector serving the communities of Humboldt Park, West Town, Logan Square, Hermosa and Belmont Cragin. I am currently the Family Support Program Manager for Family Focus Nuestra Familia, where I work with families in need of support.

I am currently a Bickerdike Board member and serve on the Rockwell BRC Affiliate Board and Board Governance Committee.

I fully support the work Bickerdike has done since it first began in 1967. Bickerdike’s mission not only includes the promise to provide affordable housing, it also reflects the organization’s overall community development approach, which combines housing with other essential components of holistic community improvement.

I am running for the board to continue providing my services and knowledge in whatever way I can to help the organization advance its work. I am very committed to helping to improve our community and try to do my part through my volunteer efforts with Bickerdike. I want to see residents in the communities Bickerdike serves have affordable housing opportunities.

I will continue to help Bickerdike in its efforts to provide services to local residents who need decent affordable homes in safe communities.

Mi nombre es Alfredo “Freddy” Calixto. Soy un residente de la comunidad de Humboldt Park desde hace mucho tiempo. Maureen Hellwig

My name is Maureen Hellwig and I moved to the West Town community after college, in 1968, one year after Bickerdike was founded. As an active member of the Northwest Community Organization (NCO) in the 1970s and 80s, and a volunteer, board member, and employee of Erie Neighborhood House, I have been in a good position to witness Bickerdike grow and applaud its achievements. I was happy to serve on the 50th Anniversary Committee prior to joining the board.

My vision has always been to do whatever I can to support organizations that strive to maintain an economically and culturally diverse community. I serve on the Local School Council of De Diego Academy in West Town and have served on the Bickerdike board for the past two years. I also remain active with Erie Neighborhood House as an occasional volunteer since retiring from there in 2014. I am also a board member of the Chicago Women’s History Center and chair the Immigrant & Refugee Ministry committee at my church, Old St. Patrick.

Having lived in West Town for more than 50 years I have seen Bickerdike’s mission in action. Gentrification has forced so many people to move away, and I am grateful for the housing that Bickerdike has provided, allowing at least some families to stay and enjoy the amenities of the changing neighborhood. I especially value how this has enabled the maintenance of some ethnic and cultural diversity.

Bickerdike should continue to do what it has done so well – develop quality affordable housing and empower tenants and other community residents to make decisions that affect their future and that of their community.

I have great respect for organizations with immense staying power as a force for social justice, sometimes from the same address. Erie House has done that from Erie Street for more than 150 years. I viewed this as so impactful I wrote a book about it. And Bickerdike is on the same path, from its same address on North Ave. for more than 50 years. So, ¡Vámonos!

Mi nombre es Maureen Hellwig y me mudé a la comunidad al terminar el colegio en el 1968, un año después de haber sido fundada Bickerdike. Cynthia Lloyd

My name is Cynthia Lloyd. I have been a Bickerdike resident for over 30 years. I am a wife, a mother of three and grandmother of four. I love helping people in the community and volunteering when needed. I believe it’s important to advocate for myself and others.

I have served many years with Humboldt Park New Communities Program Task Force. I have also served on the Local School Council for LaSalle and Von Humboldt schools, been involved in Parent Patrol, and served on the Bloomingdale Wellness program.

I believe in Bickerdike’s mission. As a long-time resident and volunteer, I have seen the positive changes that quality affordable housing has brought to the families and the communities who benefit from it.

I want to continue serving on the Board of Directors to continue serving people in the community. My years as a resident and volunteer have provided me with experience that I believe can be beneficial to the board, and the organization and the residents.

I believe Bickerdike’s role in the community is to continue to engage its residents by listening to and being responsive to their needs.

Mi nombre es Cynthia Lloyd. He sido residente de Bickerdike por más de 30 años. Soy esposa, madre de tres hijos y abuela de cuatro hijos. Me encanta ayudar a las personas en la comunidad y ser voluntario cuando sea necesario. Creo que es importante abogar por mí mismo y por los demás.
