50th Anniversary: Our Story Begins at Home

On Thursday, May 17 supporters gathered at the Radisson Blu Aqua to celebrate Bickerdike’s 50 years of community-inspired development. The evening, emceed by Mark Rivera of ABC7 Chicago, also served to honor Andrew J. Mooney and Mary A. Laraia with the Community Builder Award, and Congressman Luis V. Gutiérrez, former Bickerdike board member, with the Legacy Leader Award. (See all the photos here

The funds raised will support the continued creation of affordable housing during a time when there’s a widespread shortage.

The U.S. has a shortage of 7.2 million rental homes affordable and available to extremely low income renters, whose income is at or below the poverty guideline or 30% of their area median income. In, Illinois, only 34 affordable and available rental homes exist for every 100 extremely low income renter households.
